Give Me Oil in My Lamp

Having attended a Christian school in the initial years of my schooling, I quickly came under the spell of Christian songs. I still remember my first morning in the school, when Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus was sung in the school assembly, a rousing welcome to me to the school, where for the first time I loved being in school, because I found friends. My sister, a year older, studied in the adjacent girls’ section of the same school. She was a great blabber, and so every song she heard or learnt was dutifully shared at home. Thus I benefited from a free “double education” in those school years.

One song I have carried in my head from my childhood is Give Me Oil in My Lamp.

Give me oil in my lamp
Keep me burning burning burning
Give me oil in my lamp I pray (hallelujah!)
Give me oil in my lamp
Keep me burning burning burning
Keep me burning 'til the break of day

Sing hosanna sing hosanna
Sing hosanna to the King of kings
Sing hosanna sing hosanna
Sing hosanna to the King

Give me joy in my heart
Keep me praising praising praising
Give me joy in my heart I pray (hallelujah!)
Give me joy in my heart
Keep me praising praising praising
Keep me praising 'til the break of day

Make me fishers of men
Keep me seeking seeking seeking
Make me fishers of men I pray (hallelujah!)
Make me fishers of men
Keep me seeking seeking seeking
Keep me seeking 'til the break of day

Give me love in my heart
Keep me serving serving serving
Give me love in my heart I pray (hallelujah!)
Give me love in my heart
Keep me serving serving serving
Keep me serving 'til the break of day

Here a YouTube clip of 5-6 year olds practicing their Christmas performance song.
