Vedi Maria

I discovered the voice of Emma Shapplin in 1999, while in Jerusalem. Actually we were driving back to Jerusalem from the Dead Sea in the late afternoon, it was a beautiful day, and the haunting, ethereal-touching voice of Emma from the car’s CD player transformed the picturesque hilly landscape into the setting where the awesome, mythic, resonances of that land enacted in front of me.

What a brilliant singer, what a voice, the feelings, times, places triggered by her voice, and so ably enabled by the score of French composer and pop star Jean-Patrick Capdvielle, and the accompanying musicians. An entire genre has been defined by this classically-trained singer entering the rock arena.

L'aurora, a ferir nel volto,
Serena, fra le fronde, viemme
Celato in un aspro verno
Tu viso, il sdego lo diemme

Silentio, augei d'horrore !
Or grido e pur non ô lingua...
Silentio, 'l amor mi distrugge,
Il mio sol si perde,
Guerra, non ô da far...

Vedi Maria
Vedi Maria
Ardenda in verno,
Tenir le, vorrei,
Il carro stellato !
Madonna...

In pregion, or m'â gelosia
Veggio, senza occhi miei
Il canto, ormai non mi sferra E, nuda, scalzo fra gli stecchi

Aspecto, ne pur pace trovo
E spesso, bramo di perir
Aitarme, col tan' dolce spirto
Ond'io non posso E non posso vivir...

Vedi Maria
Vedi Maria

Che è s'amor non è ?
Che è s'amor non è ?

Vedi Maria...
Vedi Maria...
Madonna, soccorri mi...

Between the branches
Dawn just hit my face
And anger shows me yours
Frozen in an arid winter

Silence!
I shout with no tongue
Silence!
Love destroys me
And my sun has lost its way
But I have no wish to wage war

See, Marie
See, Marie

I’m burning, even in winter
And I would like to stop
The chariot of stars
Oh Madonna!

Jealousy is holding me prisoner
And I see
Without eyes
This song hurts me no more
And run barefoot among the brambles

I wait, and cannot find peace
Oh How I wish I could perish, I often shout
But I can neither live with
Nor live without such a gentle ghost

What is this, if not love?
What is this, if not love?

See, Marie
See, Marie
Madonna, come save me
