The Vaishnav tradition of eastern India, inspired by Chaitanya and Nityananda (who lived in the 16th century), and their religion of love, is also associated with a rich body of devotional music and song. Kirtan is a major form of Vaishnav devotional singing, with singer - and audience - often entering a trance-like state through the song. Gouranga is a name for Chaitanya, referring to his golden skin complexion, and it is believed that whoever hears, reads, or speaks the name Gouranga is blessed with fortune and happiness due to Chaitanya's extraordinary saintly nature.
Here’s the kirtan Gourango Karuna Koro, addressed to Chaitanya: "O Gouranga, have compassion!"
