Here's another song by Rabindranath Tagore, Aguner Poroshmani Chonwao Praney, sung by Srikanta Acharya. This song is from Tagore's play Dakghar (Post Office).

aguner poroshmani chonwao praney.
ey jibon punyo koro dohon-daney.
amar ei dehokhani tuley dhoro,
tomar oi debaloyer prodip koro
nishidin alok-shikha jwoluk ganey.
andharer gayey gayey porosh tobo
shara raat photak tara nobo nobo.
noyoner drishti hotey muchbey kalo,
jekhaney podbey shethay dekhbey alo
byatha mor uthbey jwoley urdhwo paney.

Here's a translation I found on the net:

Who will break my lock? Who will take me out of my room, O friend? No longer can I bear this lonely day without you! The day may have dawned, the sun may be peeping from the horizon.

I see a road before me, won’t your chariot arrive at my doorstep?

All the stars in the sky stare, unblinking. Waiting by the road of night-and-dawn…

Early morning, the merry pedestrians may come and go, singing in groups.

The flowers may be blooming, the strings of ‘Arunveena’ may be creating some more wondrous music…

Thanks for the lyrics.
But I think the translation isn't of "Aguner poroshmoni" at all. (more to do with bhakti porja, I guess)

I have found this translation for Aguner Poroshmoni at:
http://preyrona.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_archive.html

As my Bengali is not very good yet, please let me know if this is right.

Touch my heart with your fire
So that this life
burns as a glorious offering.

Let this body
Be like a lamp among the heavens
And every song
Light up in glowing gesture.

In the heart of darkness
I shall feel your touch
Through the nights
As you light the stars
One after another.

No darkness shall
Veil this vision -
I shall find wondrous lights
Wherever I gaze.
And my tears
Will find a blazing fervor
As they reach up for the skies.

Thanks for the English translation..
I was looking for it for some time..

can anyone give the meaning for these lines (not the translation):
nishidin alok-shikha jwoluk ganey.
andharer gayey gayey porosh tobo
shara raat photak tara nobo nobo.
noyoner drishti hotey muchbey kalo,
jekhaney podbey shethay dekhbey alo
byatha mor uthbey jwoley urdhwo paney.

maybe translations for the Bengali words in the song might help also:
poroshmani, debaloyer nishidin, alok-shikha, andharer, shethay, urdhwo paney.

Thanks again
Bish

Bless my life

Bless my life with thy warmth

With thy holy hand uplift my body

Make thy me the flame of thy holy alter

The incessant flame would brighten, the day and night

Light my soul with thy holy flame.

Thy holy hand touch the dark hour

Twinkling stars beget in your holy bower

The eternal darkness fade thy from the blinking eye

And see thy light in the darkest alcove where thy light might lie

My pain, my darkness my sadness would burn in thy holy flame

English translation of Aguner Poroshmoni:

Touch my heart with Your fire And purify it, so it can burn as a glorious offering to You.
Let me be like a lamp in your temple And let every song of mine pour out as its flame.
Whenever there's a feeling of darkness within, May I be blessed to feel Your touch And let my mind sparkle forever with newer and newer thoughts Just as You light the stars one after another all through the night.
Let the veil of darkness be lifted from my sight And let me see wondrous light wherever I gaze.
And turn all my pain into a blazing intensity in all that I do....

The literal translation would be:
"aguner poroshmani chonwao praney.
ey jibon punyo koro dohon-daney."

Light my being with your philosophers' stone, forged from fire
Fulfill my life by letting it burn as an offering

"amar ei dehokhani tuley dhoro,
tomar oi debaloyer prodip koro
nishidin alok-shikha jwoluk ganey."

Raise this body and make it a lamp in Thy temple
So that it stays alighted always, singing Thy praise

"andharer gayey gayey porosh tobo
shara raat photak tara nobo nobo."

Your touch everywhere on the veil of darkness
Gives birth to new stars all through the night

"noyoner drishti hotey muchbey kalo,
jekhaney podbey shethay dekhbey alo
byatha mor uthbey jwoley urdhwo paney."

When your touch will erase all darkness from my sight,
Wherever I look, I will find light
And all my pain shall burn with flames that reach the sky
